The Mentorship Program is an exclusive program created for our top selected entrepreneurs who are ready to roll up their sleeves and kick-start their promising businesses.
Each year, teams are selected to enroll in this one-year elite program and receive coaching from a pool of about 100 mentors, including seasoned investors, incubator executives, industry gurus, veteran entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship researchers, start-up consultants, lawyers, finance professionals, and marketing experts. At the MIT-CHIEF, mentees build deep long-term relationships with their mentors. Erdin is a Principal at Flagship Ventures focusing on sustainability and global open innovation.
Erdin comes to Flagship Ventures from Ubiquitous Energy, an organic photovoltaics startup that he co-founded while a student at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His work with Ubiquitous Energy was recognized through awards in the MIT Clean Energy Prize and Harvard Business School Business Plan Contest.
Two months before classes at MIT began, Erdin co-founded the MIT Entrepreneurship Review. With a motto of "Where Einstein Meets Edison", MITER is a journal that brings entrepreneurs the latest scientific knowledge in an easily digestible format. The publication grew from a team of three to a team of forty in its first year and became a recognized platform for science and technology entrepreneurship thought at MIT and beyond.
While at MIT, Erdin also served as a teaching assistant for seven courses, including Strategic Management of Innovation and Technology (Profs. Fiona Murray and Alan MacCormack) and From MIT to CEO: Technologists Leading Startup Ventures (Dr. Noubar Afeyan); was a Summer Associate on the energy team at Venrock Associates, working to develop Venrock's investment strategy in energy efficiency; and served as co-captain of the MIT Sloan Soccer Club, a team that won the league championship of Boston area schools in 2011.
For his work in entrepreneurship and contributions to student life at MIT, Erdin was awarded the Patrick J. McGovern Entrepreneurship Award, the Carol and Howard Anderson Fellowship, and the MIT Sloan Peer Recognition Award.
Erdin originally hails from Kyrgyzstan, a former USSR republic, and also lived in India and the United Kingdom before coming to the United States. Bernard is a business leader with diverse experience as an engineer, management consultant, and product expert. His most recent role was Regional Director of Ad Network and Platform at Yahoo!, managing their display ad network and exchange. To drive these two new businesses in the region, Bernard built the team from the ground up. In 2.5 years, he grew revenue to tens of millions USD in 9 Asian countries, supported by 200+ cross functional staff including sales, operations, and product development. Before Yahoo!, Bernard was a management consultant at Bain & Company, where he consulted for clients in China retail, telecom, and private equity sectors. Bernard began his career as telecom semiconductor engineer in the US.
Bernard is currently on the Advisory Board of Turn, a global leader in digital advertising technology.
Bernard left Yahoo! end of last year, responding to his entrepreneurial calling. He spent the last few months launching a publishing platform that focuses on lifestyle content, supported by a network of some of the top fashion and lifestyle bloggers in Hong Kong. He is now in search for his next project, with a few ideas in the education and advertising space.

Dr. Datong Chen is a founding partner of Westsummit Capital--a global technology investment fund. He was educated at Tsinghua University in China, followed by Stanford University.
Dr. Datong Chen co-founded Omnivision Technology in Silicon Valley in 1995, as well as Spreadtrum Communication in China/Silicon Valley in 2001. His accomplishments in Silicon Valley include the development of the world's first single-chip color CMOS image sensor and the first TD-SCDMA (3G) baseband processor for mobile handsets. Myoung Kang consults for high tech startups in Silicon Valley by managing finance, human resources, and legal matters. Michael is a co-founder and COO of Sample6 Technologies, a Synthetic Biology startup aiming to improve the health and safety of global consumers. Terence Russell is an experienced entrepreneur and scientist. He is the Founder and Managing Partner of Zensei Analytics, LLC, a Boston-based new venture creation and consulting company. James co-founded NutraClick shortly after graduating from Harvard in 2008, where he and Daniel Wallace met as rowers. David Song is a Co-Founder and the President (Int'l) of the Great Wall Club (GWC). The Great Wall Club's mission is to build trust and communication between companies operating within the mobile Internet industry - both in China and in the world at large. David serves as the company's spokesman and carries a strong passion and belief in the mission of GWC.
Prior to GWC, Mr. Song served as Chief Office Director of Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League, Market Director of Chinese Language Council International Promotion of Hanban, and Market Director of Cheng Cheng Investment in Culture Group CO., LTD.

Outside of the business world, David's first love has always been Table Soccer. In 2002 Mr. Song established and developed Table Soccer in China. As leader China’s National Table Soccer team he participated several international competitions in Europe and the U.S.A., ultimately earning the a 5th place individual world ranking and a 2nd place Team Competition world ranking. Steve Tang became President and CEO of the Science Center in February 2008 following an extensive nationwide search. He brings to the position a wealth of professional experience in academia, professional services, and private industry. Most notably, Dr. Tang is the first president in the Science Center's history to have not only led a company through venture funding and an initial public offering, but to also serve as a senior executive with a large life sciences company as it acquired and integrated smaller start-ups.
A seasoned life science, energy technology, and management consulting executive, Steve previously served as Group Vice President and General Manager with Olympus America Inc., where he led U.S. operations for the company's $1 billion global Life Science businesses. Before joining Olympus in 2005, he was president and CEO of Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ: MCEL), an energy technology firm he led through its initial public offering in 2000.
Previously, he served as Vice President and Managing Director of the global pharmaceutical and healthcare practice of A.T. Kearney Inc., and was Vice President and Co-managing Director of the global chemical and environmental practice for Gemini Consulting Inc., now known as Cap Gemini. In summer 2010, Eugene co-foundered TEEC Angel Fund, a supper angel fund investing in both US and China early stage companies in Silicon Valley. Eugene was founding CEO of InnoSpring, a global cross border technology startup incubator in Silicon Valley from its inception to January 2014. Eugene founded JEDA Technologies, Inc., in December, 2002 and serves as President and CEO. • Since 2004, advised International Finance Corporation on its finance to over 30 projects in China, including power plant, medical care center, education center, cement plants, new energy plants, financial institutions, water/wastewater treatment plants as well as subsequent debts restructuring and security replacement of these projects;
• Advised International Finance Corporation, DEG, Proparco on their syndicated loans to a hydropower project in China;
• Advised Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan on their proposed syndicated loans to three (3) real-estate development projects in China;
• Advised the Export-Import Bank of China on its project finance to an oversea hydropower project and an iron ore mining rail car project;
• Advised Singapore United Overseas Bank on its project finance to a real-estate project in China; and
• Advised four domestic major commercial banks on their syndicated loans to a project in China.
(2) Mergers & Accusations, Foreign Direct Investment and Corporate Matters
• Advised the Government of Singapore Investment Corp on its acquisition of a new energy company in China;
• Advised International Finance Corporation on its acquisition of a city commercial bank, a high-tech energy-saving company in Beijing, a high-tech material company in Tianjin and a chemical company in west region of China;
• Advised Microvast Inc. on its establishment of a joint venture company engaged in business of a E-battery bus driving system with a Chinese bus maker;
• Advised a US multinational energy group on its establishment of a joint venture mining company with a Chinese mining group;
• Advised an Israeli high-tech company on its establishment of a FIE in Shanghai;
• Advised a Spanish public-held company on its acquisition of a Hong Kong investment company, which directly or indirectly holds a number of infrastructure BOT projects in China;
• Advised H&Q Asia Pacific on its transfer of controlling stake in a Beijing company, which operates more than 60 Starbucks outlets in Beijing and Tianjin;
• Advised a well-known International Capital Group on its investments in a medical care center, a guarantee company and a new energy company in China;
• Advised a subsidiary of a fortune 500 company on its liquidation of a Chinese foreign equity joint venture enterprise in China;
• Advised a Hong Kong holding company on its investments in a car sales company, a car service company and a car manufacturer in China;
• Advised a German based subsidiary of a UK public company on its investment in a Chinese high-tech company;
• Advised a subsidiary of Maersk Group on its acquisition of assets of a state-owned company in China;
• Advised an Israel high-tech company on its establishment of a Chinese foreign equity joint venture company in Zhuhai, China;
• Advised a domestic hotel management group company on its proposed acquisition of an oversea hotel management company;
• Advised a subsidiary of DuPont Group on its investment and trademark related affairs in China;
• Advised a US venture capital on its acquisition of a real-estate project in China;
• Advised a US Hotel Management Group on its proposed investment in a hotel project in China;
• Advised IKEA on the construction of a new store in Beijing and a manufacturing plant in Dalian, including land acquisition, land development and construction;
• Advised Hunan Grand Theater on its global bidding for designer; and
• Advised a central State-owned enterprise on its legal due diligence over several subsidiaries home and abroad.
(3) Dispute Resolution
• Represented an international investment fund on its dispute with Chinese partner over management control in a number of onshore invested entities;
• Represented a Chinese bank in a revolving letter of credit dispute with an overseas bank before a high court in China;
• Represented a US company in a dispute with a Chinese company on lease of aviation equipment;
• Represented a major US bank in a transferable letter of credit dispute with a Chinese exporter before a high court in China;
• Represented a Chinese group company in a demand guarantee dispute with an overseas bank; and

Dr. Zhou received his Ph.D. Degree in EECS from MIT, had over 20 years of experiences in Wireless Communications and Semiconductor industries in both US and China. He held several senior executive positions in Fortune 500 companies including AT&T, Lucent, and Qualcomm. While working for large corporations, he pioneered and built the first IC Fab/foundry in China with technologies transfer from AT&T Bell Labs. He initiated and supported the indigenous mobile phone industry in China with chipsets and reference designs from Lucent and Qualcomm. Leveraging the IC Fab resources and wireless communications technologies, Dr. Zhou help found/co-founded many companies in the USA and China including: MEMSIC, Agere Systems, Top Global USA, and Bellnet Technologies. Joe has 18+ years multi-cultural and multi-national work experience. In Japan, Joe gained project management and quality control skills by working at Yokogawa Electric Corporation for 2 years. In China, Joe worked as the Vice General Manager of a Japanese company to build the first business branch and manufacturing plant in China, managed the daily operations of both the business branch and the manufacturing plant. In the U.S., Joe started as a software engineer; and then a manager was responsible for the development and evaluation of new business opportunities, including a startup that utilizes virtual reality technology in applications of pain management; now he is a managing director of Eastern Link Capital, a Private Equity firm doing investment in China.
Joe has an MBA degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management. He was in the Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation & Global Leadership, a demanding and accelerated full-time degree program for mid-career executives and entrepreneurs. He also holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Precision Engineering from Tianjin University, P. R. China.

How to Apply
For the semifinalist teams
The semifinalist teams of our MIT-CHIEF Business Plan Contest will automatically be eligible for this Mentorship Program if they choose.
Each team will have 1-2 mentors, who will have three opportunities to communicate with mentors before the opening of the conference, and one opportunity to follow up with mentors within one week after the conclusion of the conference. Based on mutual interest, mentors and mentees may choose to maintain a long-term relationship after the program ends; however, MIT-CHIEF will not be responsible for long-term coordination.
